At Be the Change, we have been iterating on our approach to training and consulting design. We ask ourselves: what does it take to go from an organization that sees itself as welcoming to an organization that fosters belonging.
Session #5: Designing Organizational Strategies for Equity (Leadership Cohort- Bootcamp)
As we move from examining tensions into an action plan, it’s easy to slip right back into the very behaviors we’re trying to change. This backslide into dominant culture practices is something we can watch for and redirect with intention. In this final session, we’ll work to integrate all that we’ve learned, share out plans and develop strategies for on-going support. Small group work will allow organizations to share their plans, get feedback and anticipate hurdles.
- Understand the patterns of “action bias” that can allow a leadership team to backslide into dominant culture practices.
- Practice the perseverance required to stay in a transformative stance.
- Learn an intentional process for antiracist project planning based on the Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology.
- Develop an antiracist action plan and generate strategies to receive ongoing feedback.

In her 20 years working with young people, Aminta has been a Program Coordinator, Youth Leadership Instructor and Program Director. Aminta majored in Community Studies, has studied Recreational Program Design and is a Certified Self Defense Instructor. Her areas of expertise as a capacity builder include Cultural Competency, Health and Safety Awareness and Community Building. Aminta is an enthusiastic cheerleader for her coaching clients, listens attentively, pays attention to details and acts as a compassionate guide through even the most difficult transitions. Aminta has a black belt in Kung Fu, and when not working you can usually find her kicking and punching her way to a more peaceful world.
Lauren Martinez has worn many hats in the field of education and youth development. They have specifically coached basketball for over five years for UCLA recreation department, taught chess in an after-school capacity, and now are currently working for Be the Change Consulting as their event manager for large conferences and as a facilitation assistant for weekly YD trainings and workshops. They hold a BS in Psychology and Biology and are currently pursuing two master’s degrees, a Master of Social Change and Master of Divinity at “the most progressive seminary in the United States,” Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, CA. Their intentions are to specifically remind youth of color through spiritual embodiment practices that center a social justice healing lens of their internal power and expanding youth understanding of ways to counter oppression and live an authentic life.

We understand that conflict is inevitable and that’s why we teach kids that apologizing is a process, not a race. Rather than rush to apologize and move on, we embrace conflict as an opportunity to slow down and teach youth the steps (pause, breath, feel, connect, restore) to acknowledge the harm and to restore the relationship.
Today, we will consider the Animal Wisdom that lives in each of us and how this activity provides kids with the opportunity to draw upon Indigenous values, in order to strengthen our communal bonds with one another and nature.
Social-Emotional Learning teaches kids to become more self-aware and cognizant of their emotional triggers, to connect with others, to foster and maintain supportive relationships, to keep calm in high-stress situations, and to make responsible decisions to help them weather any unforeseen event, such as a global pandemic.
